CONVERSATIONS on DEATH and DYING

from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, with Sindona Cassteel, bereavement counselor for North Hawaii Hospice; the session begins with a video presentation from “Dying Into Love,” an intimate conversation among four authorities in the field, followed by a moderated round table discussion. We have all kinds of education—but what prepares us to deal with the death of a loved one or our own passing? This group meets every third Tuesday of the month; please join us for individual sessions or the series.

ANCIENT YOGA

from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, with Deanna Olivier. This practice includes a physical, mental and spiritual discipline for developing awareness, character and consciousness. It is an integrated system of exercise, breath control and meditation combining yoga postures with breathing techniques for a vigorous workout. Wear loose clothing, and bring water, a small towel and a yoga mat.

CAREGIVING CONVERSATIONS

from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, with Karyn Clay, professional caregiver since 1995 and owner of Ho`onani Place, Waimea’s Adult Day Care. Whether you are a caregiver by heart, hire or relationship, join fellow caregivers in sharing stories, support and inspiration, including discussion about the importance of self-care.

STRESS RESILIENCE

from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, with Michael Aronowitz, PhD, psychologist, with decades of experience working with people to overcome stress and distress and experience more joy in life. Stressors in relationships, at work, parenting, or financial can be overwhelming; but it doesn’t have to be that way. Learn useful tools, along with tried and tested strategies, to help you get through whatever you’re going through and to build your resilience to stress.

HEALTHY BREAKFAST FAVORITES

Cooking Class from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, with Landry Fuller, certified health coach and nutrition counselor. Learn to make breakfast and brunch recipes using flavorful, healthy, nutrient-rich ingredients without refined sugar, and lower in fat. These recipes are easy to prepare and keep you feeling full longer. We will make a strawberry shortcake smoothie and tofu scramble with leeks, mushrooms and “goat” cheese — all dairy free, gluten free and vegan!

10 STEPS TO GET READY FOR RETIREMENT

from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, with AARP volunteer Ed Hickey; this workshop is designed to help you: explore the idea of retirement as a life transition, visualize your goals, and identify the steps needed to build retirement security and the life you want.

FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT AT EARL’S GARAGE

from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20, with Katherine DuBose. This is a great opportunity for family members of all ages to work together and spend some time exploring hands on activities. ALZHEIMER’S and DEMENTIA EDUCATION and SUPPORT SEMINAR

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, with Chris Ridley, MSW, Alzheimer’s Association. Starting at 9 a.m. with “What is Dementia: stages, symptoms and treatments,” this seminar will include the latest information on dementia. At 11 a.m., view the video “A Song for Martin,” an honest depiction about the ravages of Alzheimer’s (Swedish movie with English subtitles.) At 1 p.m., Ridley will present “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia,” which includes information on why behaviors occur and possible interventions. USING YOUR iPad from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, with Claire Grant, former instructor of Digital Technologies at San Francisco State University. Do you feel you aren’t taking advantage of all of the features on your iPad? Or worse, is it sitting in a drawer because it seems too daunting to attempt? No worries! We’ll gingerly step through the basics of using your iPad. You’re welcome, even if you haven’t bought an iPad yet, if you just want to see if it’s for you.

Whether a survivor, currently in treatment, recently diagnosed, or coping with the effects of cancer on a loved one, you are invited to join this group to discover the power of healing through connection with others who share a common bond.

THE NUTRITIONAL WISDOM OF NATIVE CULTURES from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, with Dr. Hanalei Roberts, naturopathic physician. During the 1930’s, dentist Weston A. Price studied native cultures eating their traditional diets, and documented their astounding health. Learn what these diverse native diets have in common and what this means for us today. CORE TRANSFORMATION from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on every Thursday, with Marie Bouman, LMT, Dancer; this is a restorative movement class with a focus on core strengthening and joint mobility. Discover, and then strengthen, the muscles that support your spine … and enjoy it, too!

MAMA-FIT CLUB for Women from 10 to 11 a.m. every Friday, with Ranya Williams. Join us for a fun video workout, appropriate for all levels of fitness. Keiki will be able to play while we sweat, so bring them along! Open to all women with or without children. Please wear comfortable clothes and exercise shoes. FIT~4~FUN for Women from 8 to 9 a.m. every Tuesday and Friday, with Kathy Cazimero, fitness enthusiast; this low impact cardio/strength workout includes stretching, leg exercises and weight training to support bone mass integrity as we age. Bring light weights to work on arms, shoulders, legs and overall body balance. Athletic shoes, a towel and comfortable clothes required.

ADVANCED UKULELE from 9:30 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday, with Aunty Marjie Spencer. Join other experienced players of all ages to learn more about the ukulele through friendship and song. Bring your own ukulele and three-ring binder for music.

KNITTING and KNITTING SUPPORT from 12:30 to 3 p.m. every Tuesday, with Gretchen Geisler, lifetime knitter. Bring your projects, get your knitting questions answered, and visit with other knitters. Beginners will be guided into a suitable project.

EASY DOES IT YOGA from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays, with Carla Orellana (first Thursday) and Rebekah Evergreen (all other Thursdays), Yoga supports healing on all levels of being. Using positions of the body and breathing to promote health and well-being, this guided practice offers an opportunity to stretch, strengthen and align your body. Turn on your body’s healing powers, while supporting flexibility, attitude, stress level and overall circulation.

SCRABBLE MEETUP from 1 to 4 p.m. every Friday, with Gary Cassel. Word lovers of every age and skill level are encouraged to play this classic (yoga for the brain) game with relaxed rules – dictionary use permitted. It’s a great way to retain and expand vocabulary, spelling, memory and observation skills in a congenial atmosphere.
