LONG TERM CARE and MEDICAID
from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, with Judy Hiller Givens, JD, attorney at law. Nursing home care is extremely expensive. Paying for it can wipe out your life’s savings in no time. Medicaid is a welfare program, and its long term care program is designed to assist only those who cannot afford to pay for such care. But the regulations recognize that there are some situations in which it is not appropriate to require an applicant to sell every asset and spend almost every dollar of the proceeds for care. If you might fall into one of the exceptions, you should act now to gather evidence in support of your position. Judy will go over the circumstances in which Medicaid will not count assets when determining your eligibility for long term care.

from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, with “Doc” Shay Bintliff, MD, canoe paddler, surfer, golfer and grandmother. This presentation will focus on certain aspects of the phenomena of retirement. For most people, retirement incites fear, whether they are willing to admit it or not. “What would I do with myself?” is a very common question. This transition is one that all of us must make at some time, and hopefully while we are still healthy, active and with lots on our ‘”Bucket Lists.”’ Dr. Bintliff will review the “stages” of retirement and offer positive suggestions to help you on this momentous journey.

Word lovers of every age and skill level are encouraged to play this classic (yoga for the brain) game with relaxed rules — dictionary use permitted. A friendly group of dedicated players makes up the core of Scrabble at Tutu’s House. There is room for games of 2 to 4 players with changes of tables and opponents as time allows. It’s a great way to retain and expand vocabulary, spelling, memory and observation skills in a congenial atmosphere.

PLAY HANAFUDA from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Monday, with Elaine Loo, Ken Tsuhako and friends; Hanafuda (“flower cards”) is a traditional Japanese card game based on images related to nature and the seasons. No experience is needed to join this group of enthusiasts.
KUNDALINI YOGA from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 16 and 23, with Deanna Zivalic. Kundalini is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline for developing awareness, character and consciousness. It is an integrated system of exercise, breath control, and meditation, which combine yoga postures with breathing techniques that results in a vigorous workout. Wear loose clothing and bring water, a small and large towel or yoga mat.
