Kohala Elementary School’s fifth graders, known as the “Reading Warriors,” are preparing to compete in “The Silver Anniversary” of The Annual Big Island Newbery Quiz Bowl to be held at the Keaau Kamehameha Schools campus on Thursday, April 24, 2014. This is KES first time to participate in this reading incentive program, which promotes reading of American Library Association’s Newbery winners.
Students diligently meet with their adviser, Melody Delostrico, throughout the week during the school day to review 40 selected Newbery Award winning literature, such as Katherine Peterson’s “Bridge to Terabithia,” Armstrong Sperry’s “Call It Courage,” Marguerite de Angeli’s “The Door in the Wall,” Clare Vanderpool’s “Moon Over Manifest” and others. Only five students can represent KES as a team and there are 12 members.
