Honokaa High School joins education effort to save ‘ohi’as through the Million ‘Ohi’a Initiative Program

Chris Wong, an intern of Kupu Hawaii/ U.S. Forestry Service, visited Honokaa High School agriculture classes to talk about the Million ‘Ohi’a Initiative Program, called Ulu lehulehu, on Wednesday, Feb. 3. He explained that the ‘ohi’a lehua is disappearing from Hawaii’s forests due to land-use, invasive species and most recently, exotic diseases.

To combat the trend of declining ‘ohi’a, Ulu Lehulehu – the Million ‘Ohi‘a Initiative will be collaborating with local growers, students, parents, and public officials; an entire community working towards replanting ‘ohi‘a in yards, schools and public parks.
