Waimea Community Chorus Director Barbara Kopra announced the group’s planned 20th Annual Holiday Concert will be in conjunction with the Chamber Orchestra of Kona at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea on Dec. 14 and 15, and at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu on Dec. 24.
Kopra, who has been leading the group since 2005 is expecting a large turnout for both membership and audiences in the fall season based on the popularity of previous Kahilu Theatre holiday performances, which have incorporated increasing number of instrumental accompanists for the group.
The chorus concert will feature a first half showcasing sacred seasonal music, both classical and modern, including selections from Ravel, Bach, Pachelbel, and music from France, Africa, Burgundy and Ireland. The second half of the planned concert will be devoted to light-hearted holiday music, including medleys of popular carols, humorous songs, and popular hits from the swing era.
The group began in 1994 with about 22 participants, many of whom had just finished a successful production of “Man of La Mancha” with Waimea Community Theatre, the chorus’ parent organization. Today, the group typically rehearses with about 70 members, although there about 60 singers at performances.
Auditions are not required but prospective members should be able to consistently attend the Tuesday evening rehearsals. More information about the chorus and the concert is available by calling the chorus manager, Miguel Bray, at 938-3062 or by visiting the group on Facebook, or on their website at www.waimeacommunitytheatre.org
The Chamber Orchestra of Kona is a community based orchestra directed by Michaeloha Elam, which presents regular concerts throughout the year as well as operating an educational program to provide students in public schools with an exposure to classical orchestral music.
The group rehearses weekly in Kealakehe Middle School and is seeking new members. More information can be obtained about COOK by calling the director at 512-294-5677, visiting the group on Facebook, or on the web at: www.chamberorchestraofkona.com.
