On Nov. 2, Mama’s House, the thrift shop with a mission, moved to Saffron Restaurant on Kawaihae Road. Bringing a fresh energy to historic Chock In Store, the new “Mama’s House Boutique & Upcountry Chic” is now in Saffron’s front room and the jewel box “Christmas Store” is located in the flower shop.
Mama’s House is the central and most visible component of The Pantry, a registered nonprofit organization, which also includes The Friday Night Crew youth coalition, Mama’s Hale Clean and Sober Housing and Waimea Artists’ Guild. With a mission to “bring new life to goods and good people,” the store re-purposes donated items, reducing the volume of near-capacity landfills and selling quality products at affordable prices.
At the same time, Mama’s House offers compliance opportunities for those with mandated community service hours through Drug Court, Circuit Court, Family Court and Teen Court. It also provides on-the-job training and work opportunity in a safe and supportive environment for recipients of Temporary Assistance For Needy Families benefits, as required by the Department of Health and Human Services’ First to Work and Supporting Employment Empowerment Hawaii Work Programs.
The Boutique offers quality furnishings and accessories, kitchenware and table linens, art, select books, vintage items, Hawaiiana and Mama’s hand-picked collection of new and gently used fashions for men, women and children, from professional to special occasion and Waimea’s signature paniolo style.
The present Mama’s House Thrift Store, next to Napa Auto, remains open daily until Nov. 10, and Mehau plans to open a “Bargain Box” thrift store in a new location early next year. A moving fund campaign is in progress on http://www.gofundme.com/4q9rlg.
