High school agricultural internships offered to Hawaii Island students

The ‘aina is the classroom for a weeklong High School Agricultural Internship Program on Hawaii Island. The spring 2014 program runs March 17–21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 28.

Based at The Kohala Center’s Ka Hua ‘Aina training farm in Honokaa, interns gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and learn about island food systems. They will visit and work on farms along the Hamakua Coast and earn a stipend for their work. The program also includes field trips to processing facilities and wholesalers, and the opportunity to meet island and state agricultural leaders.

More information and application instructions are available online at http://www.kohalacenter.org/farmertraining/interns.html, or by contacting Derrick Kiyabu at (808) 220-2312 or dkiyabu@kohalacenter.org. The program is sponsored by The Kohala Center and Kamehameha Schools’ ‘Aina Ulu Program.
