Hawaii Island Festival continues

The Hawai’i Island Festival is now through Sept. 26, and ill include a number of signature events to celebrate our island’s Hawaiian cultural legacy. This year’s Mo’i king is George Roldan and his Mo’i Wahine queen is his wife, Diane Chadwick. Also, this year’s Kindy Sproat Falsetto Contest will not be a competition but rather will showcase the falsetto skills of past winners and honor beloved Pua Garmon, who chaired this event many years but passed away quite suddenly recently. Events are mostly free though purchase of festival ribbons is urged. Also, some events do have a modest entry charge. Events to include:

• Friday, Aug. 22: Ms. Aloha Nui Pageant at 5:30 p.m. at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

• Saturday, Aug. 23: Poke Contest at 10:30 a.m. at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

• Saturday, Aug. 23: “Kindy Sproat Falsetto Concert” at 5:30 p.m., honoring Pua’ala Garmon at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

• Sunday, Aug. 31: Royal Court Attends Sunday Church Service at Waimea’s Imiola Church

• Saturday, Sept. 6: Queen Liliuokalani Festival in Hilo

• Thursday, Sept. 11: Kupuna Hula Festival and Royal Court appearance

• Saturday, Sept. 20: Waimea’s Annual Paniolo Parade at 10 a.m., followed by an all-day Ho’olaule’a, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in Waimea Park

• Friday, Sept. 26: Aloha Friday at 6 p.m. at Lanihau Shopping Center with a Royal Court appearance.
