Free college prep workshop is Jan. 28

Waimea and Honokaa students and families are invited to free college prep workshop, 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the Waimea Community Center. All families with students in eighth through 12th grade are invited to the workshop sponsored by the Sustainable Hawaii Youth Leadership Initiative. SHYLI participant Alex Siordia, an HPA student on scholarship, is the event’s organizer. Siordia’s Sustainability-In-Action project through the SHYLI program is to help local youth and families plan for college.

Speakers will include two Honokaa High School youth in the SHYLI program. Workshop will include: interactive presentations on financial aid and how it works, FAFSA, etc.; scholarships — how to find them and timelines; how to look for colleges — location, majors, public vs. private; how to write a college essay, and how to prepare for college starting from freshmen year.
