Community comments are needed by Sept. 23 on a draft environmental assessment for the planned Waimea district park. The two-phase master-planned facility will offer diversified recreational opportunities for both indoor and outdoor sports. Phase 1 is approximately 24 acres as a district park. Phase 2 is approximately 26 additional acres will expand the district park into a regional park. Comments are needed from residents addressing the deficiency of athletic and recreational opportunities for Waimea residents and for other surrounding communities in the South Kohala District. The park will include fields for football, rugby, soccer, baseball, and softball as well as a covered play court for sports such as volleyball and basketball. It will also provide a larger community gathering area. The draft environmental assessment may be viewed at the Hilo and Kailua-Kona Public Libraries as well as Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea.
