The Alzheimer’s Association, Aloha Chapter, will offer a series of free caregivers classes and support groups, starting with an Introductory Open House, 5-6:30 p.m., April 19, at Ho’o Nani Place on Lindsey Road in Waimea.
Caregiver classes are: May 19, June 21, July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 20. Through a grant with the Office of Aging, there will be free adult care available during the meetings at Ho’o Nani Place.
The classes will· help families: learn the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, learn the importance of early detection, understand the stages of the disease, learn what to do after the diagnosis, develop beneficial relationships with doctors, gain information on organizing legal, financial and medical affairs, and learn how to manage challenging behaviors. The classes will also teach the importance of respite care and learning from other families through support groups.
