‘Honokaa Loves Music’ exhibit to open at NHERC

The “Honokaa Loves Music” exhibit opening reception is 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23, at the North Hawaii Education and Research Heritage Center in Honokaa. The new exhibit celebrates the unique heritage of music in North Hamakua. The exhibit will explore everything from ancient chants, to plantation bands, and even the Hamakua County Band, which was originally called the Honokaa Band formed in 1884 — making it the second oldest band after the Hilo Band on the island.

This year also marks the 35th year since Garry Washburn became the band teacher at Honokaa High School, and the exhibit will feature a retrospective on the Honokaa Jazz Band and Ensemble to mark the anniversary. Members of the Honokaa High School Jazz Band will perform at the opening reception. NHERC’s Heritage Center is located below the old Honokaa Hospital at 45-539 Plumeria St. Free and all welcome but, an RSVP is suggested to Janet Lindsey at 775-8890 or email janetlin@hawaii.edu.
