Parker Ranch trustees and Waimea community leaders gathered on Aug. 1 to celebrate the 18 students selected to receive $90,000 in scholarships from the Richard Smart Scholarship Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation. The Fund addresses some of the barriers to college completion by providing renewable scholarships for Waimea residents who are the first in their family to complete an undergraduate college degree.
This year, Hawaii Community Foundation’s scholarship funds provided $650,000 in awards to 217 Hawaii Island students.
Established in 2001 at the Hawaii Community Foundation, the Richard Smart Fund is one of the beneficiaries of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. The Fund has supported 21 students with $195,000 in scholarships and has awarded more than $2 million in grants to 49 organizations that serve the Waimea community. Other beneficiaries of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust include Hawaii Preparatory Academy, the North Hawaii Community Hospital and the Parker School Trust Corporation.
