Mauna Kea Polo Club swings into new season

Big Island polo games are held every Sunday at 1 p.m. at the polo field at Waikii Ranch, on the old Saddle Road. Gates open at 12 p.m., and all are invited. Tickets are $5 per person; free for children 12 and under and for military personnel with valid ID. Mauna Kea Polo Club Social memberships are also available for $50. These include tickets for each game for you and one guest for the entire season. Tickets may be purchased at the gate or at the Wishard Gallery in Waimea.

Each match consists of four chukkers, or sections, approximately seven minutes long. Game “themes” may be subject to change. The intent is to have fun in a family-friendly setting .

Oct. 26: Saturday: Youth Polo Clinic for aspiring young polo players: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Waikii Ranch. Instruction given on the basics of the game, mallet handling, and actual riding practice on the polo field. Free for youth 18 and younger, $20 for all others. Both girls and boys are welcome to participate and the public is invited.

Oct. 27: Sunday. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced polo matches. Theme is Happy Halloween Costume Contest among the spectators.

Nov. 3: As above, with a patriotic colors theme for for Election Day.

Nov. 10: As above, In honor of Veterans’ Day, Vets and Active Duty personnel with free entry.

Nov. 17: As above, with Turkey Trot as the theme for the day.

Nov. 24: MKPC Women’s Challenge to benefit Hope Lodge, American Cancer Society. “Pretty in Pink” is the theme for the day.

Dec. 1: Carlos Rivas Memorial Polo Tournament and Hospice Benefit at Waikii Ranch.

Dec. 8: Armature Cup. Sponsored by the U.S. Polo Association.

Dec. 15: Player’s Cup — last game of the season, with a Christmas theme. Sponsored by the U.S. Polo Association.
