The Kahilu Theatre will open its doors for a Family Fun Day on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Fun Day is free and open to the public.

The “main event” is the launch of Kahilu Theatre’s season, which will be released for public sale that day. The launch will be celebrated with a day of family activities and entertainment inside and surrounding the theater, including magic, dance, musical theater, circus acts, live music, and food trucks.

The Great Barusky will be walking through the lobby and galleries performing close up magic, and will also perform a full magic show at 12noon.

Life in Pursuit will play from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. from the lobby stage. Life in Pursuit is a young, three-piece group hailing from the Hamakua Coast — brothers Chase and Carl Kauhane and longtime friend Ryan Higgins grew up together, and in 2009, after playing music together for months, decided to become a band officially.

The Keiki Performing Arts Workshop will perform on the main stage at 1:30 p.m. KPAW is a two-week summer camp hosted by Kahilu Theatre for 24 youth free of charge. The children are between 8 and 11 years old and will perform songs from musical theater favorites such as “Annie,” “Matilda,” “The King and I,” “Toy,” “Mary Poppins” and more.

Annetta Lucero will bring both circus character walkabout and baton twirling to Kahilu Thatre. Lucero is a three-time world champion in baton twirling and a two-time Guinness World Record holder, a Cirque du Soleil special events artist, and a renowned choreographer. Her baton twirling shows will be at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Dance teachers from Kahilu’s after school classes will also offer free workshops on stage — featuring hip hop, beginning ballet and contemporary dance. Lanakila Mangauil will offer open hula classes on the grass outside the Theatre. Kahilu Theatre’s after school classes run in conjunction with Prince Dance Institute and are doubling in number to 14 a week, starting from the second week of September. Online registrations for the classes will also be open from Aug. 10.

This will be the first of four Family Fun Days planned for Kahilu’s upcoming season. The next Kahilu Family Fun Day will be on Saturday, Nov. 22, to celebrate the Waimea Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar Institute and Festival.

The Kahilu Theatre 2014-2015 season goes on sale on Aug. 10 at www.kahilutheatre.org and at the Kahilu Family Fun Day. Call the Kahilu Theatre Box Office at 885-6868 for information about season subscriptions, membership, and education programs.
