Amy Hanaiali‘i will perform a Christmas concert at Kahilu Theatre at 8 pm. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Kahilu Theatre — one of three concerts she will perform on Hawaii Island.
Hanaiali‘i’s band will include Kamuela Kimokeo, Steve Jones, and Darryl Pellegrini. Amy Hanaiali‘i is Hawaii’s top selling female vocalist of all time. She is a five-time Grammy nominee and a 17-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner. All 11 of her albums have been in the top 10 World Billboard Charts.
While Hanaiali‘i received years of formal musical and theatrical training, it was her Tutu Jennie who ultimately inspired her to grow in Hawaiian music. Recognizing her natural vocal abilities, she arranged for a meeting between the legendary Genoa Keawe and her granddaughter. It was Aunty Genoa that introduced Amy to the ha‘i falsetto music. Hanaiali‘i’s talent of ha‘i brought a new found appreciation for the art of Hawaiian female falsetto style for which she is known today.
Hanaiali‘i has opened for numerous acts such as: Joe Cocker, Diana Krall, Earth Wind and Fire, Boz Skaggs, and Carlos Santana and recorded an acclaimed duet with Willie Nelson on her Friends and Family CD. She has performed numerous times with the Honolulu Symphony Pops and made her debut with the Nashville Symphony.
Hanaiali‘i’s Christmas Concert is a blend of traditional Christmas songs sung in Hawaiian and English. This show is a tribute to her childhood growing up in a Hawaiian church, while holding true to her classic hits that have made her so popular. The shows are produced by Tim Bostock Productions – a longtime Honolulu promoter who recently moved to Hawaii Island. Since September, Bostock has been the artistic and general manager of the Kahilu Theatre.
Tickets for Amy Hanaiali‘i “Christmas on the Big Island” with her band are available in advance from Kahilutheatre.org, or 885-6868 for the Kamuela show. Tickets are reserved seating ranging from $20 to $65, with discounts for Kahilu Theatre members.
