Christmas for 464 Hawaii Island seniors was brighter when about 24 dedicated volunteers joined the staff at Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Waikoloa Queens’ MarketPlace at 8 a.m. to prepared hot turkey dinners for them. Meals included hot turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, steamed fresh broccoli and pumpkin pie. Each senior also received a blanket. Costco in Kona donated 40 turkeys for the meals.
“Each year we keep getting bigger and better,” said Rhonda Bell, Big Island Giving Tree coordinator. “This year we were done plating and packing in less than an hour. Chef Scott had an awesome system.”
This year, volunteers delivered senior meals to Hualalai Phases 1,2,3, Captain Cook, Kealakekua, Waimea, Kohala and Honoka’a. They also gave out meals to people who are homeless that live on Ali’i Drive, the Old Airport and Kawaihae.
